DO YOU NEED A NEW Air Conditioner?
A reliable air conditioning system can make all the difference for your home or business, but nothing lasts forever. Even under the best conditions, a high-quality air conditioner will need to be replaced after 15-20 years of faithful service. And, in a warm climate like tropical Southwest Florida, that estimate shortens to 10-15 years. So how do you know when your air conditioner needs to be replaced?
Common Warning Signs
- Compressor failure
- Skyrocketing energy bills
- Visible corrosion or leaks around the condenser
- Odd sounds or loud noises from HVAC system
- Drastic increase in dust around your home
- Difficulty achieving a comfortable, consistent temperature
- Repairs cost more than 50% of replacement unit cost
If you’re on the fence about whether you need to replace your air conditioning system, contact the Pro-Tec experts at (239) 261-1000. A licensed air conditioning technician can inspect your unit to identify the problem, recommending repairs or replacement if needed. Second opinions are always encouraged. Just be sure to always let a professional complete projects, rather than tackling them DIY-style. Working with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units is both complex and potentially dangerous. Pro-Tec repairs, maintains and installs ALL residential air conditioning brands.

MYTH BUSTERS:
THE AIR CONDITIONING EDITION
Test your air conditioning knowledge against these common myths and misconceptions. For more information, visit the Pro-Tec blog at

Fact: More size, also expressed as tonnage, will not equate to better cooling or reduced energy bills. In fact, a unit that is too large for your property may perform worse, if it starts and stops more frequently. Instead, what matters most is having your technician perform a Manual J load calculation. This will identify the correctly sized air conditioning unit for your needs.
Fact: While a SEER rating is a good gauge of potential efficiency, a bad installation is a far bigger indicator of efficiency and expected lifespan than your SEER rating. Other factors also impact efficiency, such as the status of your equipment, how clean or dirty the ductwork is, and whether your air filter is clogged enough to inhibit airflow.
Fact: This is one of the most dangerous myths that Pro-Tec encounters. But maintenance should be proactive, not reactive because waiting for problems will cost you twice in money and comfort. Additionally, most major air conditioning brands will not honor your warranty if it is not being serviced yearly. Finally, ignoring regular maintenance takes years off the life of your system. It’s the difference between a unit that lasts 8 to 12 years at best, instead of the typical 15 to 20 years.
Fact: If your air conditioner is on its last legs, it’s not operating anywhere near maximum efficiency. That’s going to cost you money and comfort when it breaks down, which usually happens during the first unbearably hot days of the spring or early summer. There’s a rush for installations and service during these days, resulting in delays while you’re waiting for service. It’s not worth the risk.
If it’s close to dying, you will have to replace it eventually anyway. Why not start saving on utility costs now instead of later? Equipment only gets more expensive year to year, so the replacement will increase in price with each passing year. Speak with your trusted air conditioning partner to figure out when it makes the most sense to replace your existing equipment.
